Always check with your health care provider
before beginning any exercise and or nutrition program.

My ophthalmologist started it all.  During a routine eye exam he saw some
hemorrhaging in the back of my eye and asked me if I had diabetes.  I
answered, "no" and immediately began to worry.  He sent me to my physician
who ran me through a fasting blood test.  It showed that I was "glucose
intolerant" also known as "pre-diabetes".  Major changes were the order of
the day.

This is what worked for me:
[Please check with your health care provider before you begin
any exercise and or nutrition program - especially this one.]

1 - Change What I Was Eating...

I ate EVERYTHING!, but particularly mint chocolate chip ice cream.  That
needed to change and I stopped eating a lot of refined sugar.  Now I have a
one scoop sugar free dish every once in a while...but not daily...or hourly...
or by the half gallon.

Also, I discovered fruits and veggies again!  What a treat!

I make my own buckwheat bread [Hunza] which is super dense.  I have a
piece for breakfast and it fills me up till my mid-morning banana or other
fruit.  Also, I sometimes snack on a handful of peanuts [no salt].  Lunch is
often some soup with Hunza bread and flavored water [I like mine with a
slice of lime].  In the afternoon I treat myself to yogurt or fruit.  Supper is
family time so I eat with them...it could be grilled or spaghetti or pizza or
Chinese/Mexican/other nationalities...whatever the family shares, I
share...just not to excess.

2 - Change My Exercise Pattern

This was easy since I had no pattern...I did not exercise.  My body was not
happy with me.  I was short of breath when I walked and I often had
backaches.  Also, I was unable to participate in many of the activities I
wanted to share with my children, then ages 4 and 7.

My pre-diabetes results came in June.  As a teacher there are two big reasons
why I enjoy teaching - July and August!  Starting my program then allowed me
the time to walk, hike, golf, scooter, kayak like crazy, and stretch at the end of
my activity.  When September came around I realized that I needed to "take
the time" everyday, at least a half-hour, to do something for the only body I
have been given...and I'd like to keep it running a long time!

3 - Lose Weight

I discovered the super-secret-magic words to losing 85 pounds
in a week!!!
[there are no super-magic-secret words/pills/equipment/foods that will do this]

The Good News is that if you use common sense the weight will fall off...if
you burn more calories [any kind of calories] than you consume you will lose
weight!

Some people look at me and say, "I just don't have the will power to stay in a
diet."

Neither do I.  I do have "won't power".  I won't put those things into my mouth
that are going to harm me.
